Hi everyone, and for those of you that have been on holiday, I hope you've had a good and durable break and you're feeling all refreshed. The reason for the name change to Global Trade Deciphered is to have the subject matter global trade in the title. This will help people searching for global trade issues to find it more easily on the internet and in podcast apps. The subject matter and format is broadly the same, it's just the name that's different. Deciphered is slightly more complicated than other alternatives that I'd been considering, but you know I really like it. A lot of business and global trade resources can be pretty inaccessible to most people, sometimes speaking in tech-speaking code, and I like Deciphered because it's related to code breaking and suggests breaking down complex codes and trade issues into understandable insights and making it all comprehensible. Deciphered in the title it reminds me as well and commits me to making global trade less intimidating. Deciphered has a sort of IT computer, even supercomputer, connotation as well, and I'm very attentive that the podcast brings you value by addressing issues that can't be found using AI or the internet, by interviewing top world-class experts and industry leaders where they explain their latest thinking and what they intend to be doing next. Ai can help predict these, but the experts and industry leaders on this podcast, the decision makers, are to tell you themselves here what they intend to be doing and what will be happening next, to allow you to hear it from the horse's mouth.
Justin Hayden Miller:Ciphering and deciphering methods of secret language communications for trade have been used since ancient and medieval times and by the Greeks and the Romans to protect trade secrets or pricing agreements. The Dutch and the British East India Company use ciphers to safeguard shipping routes and diplomatic correspondence related to trade arrangements. Encryption is even a form of ciphering which is used heavily today for financial transactions, blockchain and e-commerce, and so I intend that the series keeps pace and comments on the latest technological trends as well. Anyway, here's the new intro. Welcome to Global Trade Deciphered. I'm your host, Justin Hayden-Miller, a global trade lawyer and a partner at one of Europe's largest commercial law firms decoding the latest global trade and business trends.
Justin Hayden Miller:When I thought of starting this podcast, a number of people told me that it would take a while for it to find its voice and that I should re-evaluate the concept after 10 episodes or so. And that includes the name. And that's precisely what I've done, and, like ourselves, we're all constantly evolving, even if, like this podcast, we stay fundamentally the same. For example, did you know that Google wasn't actually called Google at the outset? It was called Backrub, and the fact that it's no longer called Backrub has undoubtedly prevented a great many number of misunderstandings. It was renamed Google in 1997 as a play on the word Google, g-o-o-g-o-l, which is a mathematical term for the number one, followed by 100 zeros, reflecting Google's mission to organize vast amounts of information on the web. So it's a binary joke. But in fact the founders of Google reportedly misspelled the word, so the company name is spelled with L-E at the end.
Justin Hayden Miller:Anyway, for my thumbnail for the podcast, I got rid of the picture of me it's in the host section, if you really have to see what I look like and I've added my own binary number effect to try and make it more visually interesting. I think it fits in well with the deciphered theme. As the great bard William Shakespeare said, or as what Juliet told Romeo that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. And this podcast, with a different brand name, aims to be just as good as it was before, and even trying to be better, by addressing the issues that most interest you, for heaven's sake. Even I've been rebranded because when I was born, I was originally called Oliver and my name was changed just in time before my birth certificate was filed. Names do nevertheless influence people and their personalities, and having global trade in the title will help us stay on focus and, deciphered, will remind me to making global trade less intimidating. I've got more great guests in store for you, including a key motor industry leader for our next episode.
Justin Hayden Miller:Hopefully, having listened to my previous episodes, you'll realize that I've aimed that the podcast concentrates on some interesting and deep policy issues. Trade policies undoubtedly shift, but it's worth noting that the insights that I'm analysing in each of the episodes of the series are designed to stand the test of time. The aim, therefore, is that the series and discussions with global world experts that I invite remain consistently relevant in the months and even years to come. So, regardless of when you're listening to this, you can listen to the previous episodes in the back catalogue, but I'm finding the series really quite fun, and hopefully you are too. I really am trying to make the subjects as interesting as possible for you, with the aim that you'll think about the issues and angles at least for a little while longer after the episode is finished. And I am attached to the brand Privileged Discussions and I won't be leaving it completely, since I'll retain it as the productions brand for this and quite possibly for other podcasts that can form part of the Privileged Discussions family.
Justin Hayden Miller:But do contact me if you have any ideas for any episodes or if any subjects particularly interest you. It really is the case that your feedback is really really helpful to me, and a number of people have given me feedback and it really really is helpful. Honestly, it sounds a bit cliché, but this is your podcast and it's you that's listening to it. So do drop me a line and give me any ideas or feedback. For instance, do you prefer episodes where I invite a guest or those that I do on my own? Let me know. You can contact me by email at globaltradedeciphered all one word at gmailcom, or follow and connect with me on X at justinhaydenm. I'll put the links in the show notes.
Justin Hayden Miller:Podcasts tend to grow, not generally because of internet searches or logarithms, but because someone who likes it tells a friend or colleague. So do tell people about it, tell friends, colleagues about the podcast, so we can get it to grow some more. Thanks for listening and I hope you'll stay around. If you're listening to this, then thank you for having listened to the podcast from beginning to end. If you like it, do subscribe so you don't miss any episodes, and feel free to leave a rating. This will help others find it. You can find me on X at Justin Hayden, followed by the letter M, or send me an email at globaltradedeciphered at gmailcom.
