Justin Hayden Miller:

Welcome to Global Trade Deciphered. I'm your host, Justin Hayden Miller, a global trade lawyer with a leading European firm, decoding the policies shaping global trade and emerging trends. Hello everyone. Welcome to Global Trade Deciphered, the podcast that explores the intricate world of global trade, geopolitics, and the global economy. I'm your host, Justin Hayden Miller. Whether you're a business leader navigating complex supply chains, a policymaker crafting strategies for international relations, or simply someone intrigued by the forces that connect our world, you've come to the right place. In this introductory episode, I'll share what this podcast is all about, why it matters now more than ever, and a bit about my own journey in this field to give you a sense of the perspective I'll bring to our discussions. I've heard that about half of podcast listeners listen to podcasts in the home, but whether you're at home or in the car or in the gym, or just walking the dog, and wherever you are, welcome to the series. So what's different about this particular podcast? Global trade and geopolitics can often seem like dense technical subjects, filled with regulations and jargon that feel inaccessible to anyone outside a narrow circle of experts. This podcast aims to change that. We'll decode these topics in a way that's engaging, informative, and accessible to everyone, from seasoned executives to those starting to explore international business. At the same time, we'll provide the depth and the nuance that experts appreciate, offering alternative perspectives that challenge conventional thinking. I'll draw on insights from history, economics, philosophy, and even the arts to illuminate how current events are reshaping global markets. The goal is to make these issues not just understandable, but relevant to your decisions, whether in the boardroom, in policy debates, or in understanding the world around you. Let me explain why I started this podcast and what you can expect. In today's interconnected economy, global trade isn't just about moving goods across borders. It's the backbone of innovation, growth, and stability. But it's also fraught with challenges, tariffs that shift overnight, supply chain disruptions from geopolitical tensions, regulatory changes that upend entire industries and emerging trends like AI, decarbonisation and digital trade. These aren't abstract concepts. They directly impact businesses, jobs and economies worldwide. Through this series we'll break down episode by episode, providing clear analysis and forward-looking insights. And crucially, we'll feature the very best world-class experts, highly regarded in their fields, industry leaders, policy makers, and decision makers who are actively shaping these areas. Their first hand experiences will offer you a window into the strategies and the thinking that drive real-world outcomes. What truly sets global trade deciphered apart is its focus on the human element in an era dominated by data and AI. While artificial intelligence can crunch numbers and predict trends, it can sometimes miss the subtle nuances, the historical contexts, the interpersonal negotiations, the ethical considerations that define global trade. Here we emphasize direct insights from those on the ground. Think of it as code-breaking, but for the modern economy. Just as ancient civilizations used ciphers to protect trade secrets like shipping routes or pricing agreements, today's world relies on encryption for everything from blockchain to e-commerce. We'll decipher the codes of complex policies, turning them into actionable intelligence you can use to anticipate risks and seize opportunities. Until my guests appear, I'll mostly be joined on my podcast by a cup of coffee or tea, depending upon the time of day. But let's talk about what I bring to the table. As a global trade lawyer and partner at one of Europe's largest commercial law firms, I've dedicated nearly three decades to navigating the complexities of international trade, customs and tax. My career began as a barrister at UK Customs Headquarters in London, where I handled important litigation concerning international issues. This role gave me an insider's view of how governments enforce rules from customs seizures to intricate international issues. From there, I became an advoca, lawyer in France, building expertise across Europe. At the big four and major world consultancy firms, I have led teams advising multinational corporations on supply chain optimizations, compliance, and strategy. From everyday issues to guiding major listed companies handling matters spanning all 27 EU member states and the UK. Global trade is more than rules and tariffs. It's about people, innovation, and adapting to change. I've seen firsthand how a single regulatory tweak can cascade through supply chains, affecting everything from manufacturing costs to market access. And I've learned that the best solutions often come from viewing issues through multiple lenses, historical precedents, like how ancient trade routes influenced modern geopolitics, economic models that predict shifts in global power, or even philosophical questions about fairness in international agreements. So I want the podcast to analyze issues from these perspectives as well. That's why in this podcast we'll not only analyze current affairs, but also explore how these concepts can apply more broadly to your business strategies, policy decisions, or simply your personal understanding of the world. We'll discuss strategies for turning volatility into competitive advantage. And yes, we'll provide alternative perspectives. Questioning mainstream narratives, drawing parallels from history, and considering ethical dimensions, episodes will be evergreen. They'll remain relevant whether you listen today or in years to come. I've aimed for a mix of formats, some solo, others featuring in-depth interviews to keep you updated on fast moving trends.
